Plus, How to Balance Our Needs with a Planet in Crisis
Hi there,
Before we start, here is our upcoming events for the next few weeks:
I’m really excited to host our first Salon this Friday, 4/25. We are fully booked, and I can’t wait to chat with Brad Ford from Field + Supply, Susan Sandler from Pop Up Season, and our amazing guests.
I am also thrilled to announce that on MAY 9th at 10:30 am, Zuzanna von Salm (Founder of Ceremonia Meditation) is opening her private sanctuary in Southampton just for Matriark and our guests. We will have a quick chat with Zuzanna and our friend Maria Lavezzo from Studio La Maria, then Zuzanna will lead a meditation session for wellbeing and abundance, followed by complimentary mini facials by Rowm Beauty (their amazing Co-Founder Rowaida Younes will be there too). All of this while sipping on delicious drinks by Aplos and nibbling on heathy snacks. PAID SUBSCRIBERS WILL RECEIVE INVITATIONS TODAY, Free subscribers will receive it on Monday 4/28. Price for this event is: Paid subscribers $45, Free subscribers $55, and Non-Subscribers $60. Founding Members are welcome at no additional cost. We only have 12 spots, so please make sure to upgrade your subscription ASAP to receive this invitation today.
Back to our regular programming!
By now, we all know that nothing is 100% sustainable. Remember when Covid hit, and suddenly animals were thriving as we paused our busy, polluting, trash-producing lives? It was a wake-up call, a harsh reminder that our very existence isn’t sustainable. So, how do we reconcile our livelihoods, our capitalist system, and our need for a full human experience with what’s happening to the Earth?
I don’t pretend to have the answers. I’m no expert in climate change or sustainability, but I cringe every time I see a new brand claiming to be “sustainable” just because they use organic fabrics or consciously source their materials. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for supporting new businesses, but we need to start being more honest with ourselves. Before launching a company, we should be asking: do we really need this product? Are we solving a real problem, or just creating more garbage? It may sound harsh, but trust me, we have way more products than we’ll ever need. Just visit a trade show and you’ll leave feeling completely exasperated by the insane number of items that will inevitably end up in a landfill.
So today, I’m focusing this newsletter on resale and vintage stores. My Wishlist is full of timeless designs I know I would wear for years to come, and pieces I would pass down to my daughter. This is all to say: when purchasing anything, please consider price-per-wear rather than just price. I’ll also share a few things I’ve been doing to reduce my consumption of plastic and overly packaged goods. Far from perfect, I know, but if we all do our part, maybe this planet stands a chance.
