Shop Black-Owned!
Freedom is a complicated word. Who has it, how much of it, and why we have it are questions that come to my mind when I think of this word. We’ve recently celebrated Juneteenth, marking June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and announced the emancipation of over 250,000 enslaved Black people. Sadly, this declaration came two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect in 1863. While progress has been made since then, the Black community often finds that every step forward is met with two steps back.
In a recent example, Atlanta-based investment firm Fearless Fund was barred from conducting a contest that awarded grants to businesses owned by Black women. A federal appeals court sided Edward Blum, an affirmative-action opponent, ruling that this contest violated Section 1981—a law originally established to protect former slaves from discrimination to being with!!! This type of regressive action aims to undermine the rights of Black people and, as Aurora James eloquently stated, will ultimately affect all minorities, not just Black women. You can watch her passionate speech on Instagram here, and read more about this crazy ruling here.
Now, more than ever, it’s critical that we support Black-owned businesses everywhere. Scroll down for our curated selection of beautiful products, and remember to seek out and support Black and minority-owned businesses year-round. We remain committed to featuring them here at Matriark.
Also, check the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture website for more information about Juneteenth, and donate to organizations such as The Fifteen Percent Pledge, Color of Change, Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp, Black Women’s Health Imperative, The Loveland Foundation, and The Black Women’s Agenda Inc.
