Textile Artist Kira Foley began working with vintage quilts in the winter of 2020. These coats are born from the idea of maintaining the beauty of older and slightly damaged textiles by transmuting them from quilts to wearable art. This is a process as old as the craft of quilting itself, found in countless cultures, eras and styles.All quilts selected for this process, are hand-stitched, made before 1940 and are damaged and blemished from years of loyal use,; and to minimize waste, two jackets are fashioned from each and every quilt.
Each jacket is a one-of-a-kind garment that visually and wordlessly conveys a story that stretches from the fingers of the women (and men!) who, dyed, designed and stitched them by hand to the person who wears it today.”
